Cooking Tech at Tamaki College

Last week we were able to go to Tamaki College to develop cooking, graphic and many more skills. We had cooking. Our cooking tutor for the 15 weeks was Mrs Tuipolotu. She teaches the year sevens, eights, nines and tens.
We made a sponge cake and decorated it with smarties, kitkat, flake, butter cream, whipped cream, white and brown chocolate droplets. In the end our whole class was impressed with what we had made. But, sadly that was our last session with cooking and now we will be moving on to Graphics.

Preventing Illnesses

Preventing Illnesses
To know how to prevent illnesses first you have to know what an illnesses is so...

What Is An Illness?
An Illness is when something is affecting your body and your mind. It can also stop your mind from working normally. An illness can be treated and also be cured unlike a disease, a disease can be treated but not cured.

Types of Illnesses
There are many types of illnesses. Some illnesses are acute which means they come and go quickly for example the cold and flu are acute. Types of illnesses are…
  • Chicken pox
  • Asthma
  • Sore Throats (Rheumatic Fever)
  • Allergies...

Causes Of Illness
You can get different types of illnesses in different ways. The flu is a well known illness which is caused when…
  • Not washing your hand
  • Coughing
  • Getting close contact with sick people
  • Sneezing
  • Not eating healthy

Consequences
When you get an illness you will notice that you will start to..
  • Cough
  • Sneeze
  • Have Temperatures
  • Feel Dizzy
  • Have a runny nose…

Preventing Illnesses
To prevent illnesses you can
  • Wash your hands when needed or dirty
  • Coughing and Sneezing in your arms
  • Having a shower daily
  • Eating healthy food
  • Seeing a doctor

It is important to tell someone when you feel sick, or if you are unwell or if you have an illness. If you don’t and the illness develops more bacteria and you may even die.

Visual Arts

Every Friday Afternoon we do Visual Arts. We have been learning about Water, Water Sustainability, the importance of water, how to conserve water and much more. We had to choose a water symbol and draw it for our Visual Arts.
First, we had to sketch our symbol. After sketching we had to colour it with pastel. Some of the students in our class used smudging to make it look a bit more realistic.

I chose my symbol because we were learning about conserving water and the water cycle.

Syndicate Assembly

This week's syndicate assembly was hosted by Room 12. It was meant to be hosted by Room Nine, but unfortunately their teacher had to was sick, so since Room 12 (us year eights) are the eldest we had to cover for them.

Miria, Sini, Simon, Don and myself (Elizabeth) volunteered to show our Visual Arts we had just finished recently. We had to say a little speech for each step we had done to finish our visual arts.

Our Visual Arts was based on Water. We chose a symbol and sketched it. We all believe that our pictures were a success.

The Waste Performance

Tuesday the 19th  of May 2015, Matt and Andy - two male performers came to our school to do a show on the importance of not wasting food. It was about a man named Simon, a worm and saving their land.
Simon kept overflowing his fridge, fruit bowl and pantry instead of putting it in the compost for the worm to eat. It was held in ‘Yummy Land’. But, in the end Simon and the worm saved Yummy Land together.

Mathematics

Throughout Term 2 we have been learning five different strategies to help our learning and develop our knowledge about mathematics. These strategies help us and make it easier to figure out a mathematical question, problem or equation . We had to make our own word problems, name what strategy we used to get the calculation and also write down the correct calculation for the word problem we have created.

This is the word problem I have created....

In a giant bucket there was 698 litres of water then someone put in another 252 litres in. How many litres are there altogether?

And this is the strategy that I used to get my calculation...

Strategy 3:Increase one number and decrease the other by the same amount.

For example:

 254+746=

=294+6+706-6

=300+700

=1,000

Try figuring out my equation and see if you could work it out by using Strategy 3.
